When Does Morning Sickness Start?
71What is Going On With Me?
- The First Trimester
All you want to know about morning sickness and everything else that is going on with your body at the beginning of your pregnancy.
Oh My Stomach
One of the early signs of pregnancy, before the baby kicks or your feet swell, is morning sickness. And many expecting moms experience this nausea or vomiting some time during pregnancy. In fact, morning sickness is the most frequently reported medical complaint of pregnancy.
When does morning sickness start and will it happen to you?
Why Throw Up?
The causes of morning sickness are not completely understood. A common theory is the sudden change of hormone levels.
I Feel OK Now
If you are early in your pregnancy, you may be wondering when the morning sickness starts.
Maybe never. But chances are good you will.
Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms in early pregnancy for many women. Depending on the study, 50 to 75% of pregnant women suffer from morning sickness.
Typically, morning sickness starts before the 6th week of pregnancy and peaks between 8 and 12 weeks.
If morning sickness begins after 9 weeks of gestation, be sure to mention it to your doctor to make sure there are no other causes of nausea or vomiting.
So, When Does It End?
If you have it, you want it to end right now. Hopefully, this is some relief to you. Morning sickness is often known as a first trimester condition--it often tapers off between 12 and 16 weeks. In fact, about 60% of women will be over their nausea by the 12th week and over than 90% are feeling better by the 16th week.
Why and how it ends is as unknown as why it starts, but there are methods that are thought to help end morning sickness sooner than later. And, even though it generally is a first trimester condition, a few unfortunate women will continue to have nausea throughout the pregnancy or find it returning in the final weeks of the pregnancy.
Not Just in the Morning
Although it's called "morning sickness", that feeling of nausea or vomiting can happen anytime during the day. A couple of studies found slight increases in nausea from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m., but most women who suffer may be sick at anytime during the day.
For most moms-to-be, morning sickness, while annoying, is mild. One to 3% of women of women will experience severe nausea and vomiting that requires monitoring. This is called hyperemesis gravidarum and you should ask your practitioner about it if you
- haven't been able to keep any food or drink down for 24 hours.
- have weight loss.
- have concentrated, dark-colored urine.
Will I Have Morning Sickness?
Odds are good just based on statistics. However, there are things in your life you can look at to see if you might be more likely.
- If you were sick during the first pregnancy.
- If you are carrying multiples.
- If you have a history of nausea or vomiting with birth control pills.
If you know that you are more likely to experience morning sickness, you can be prepared to deal with the possibility of nausea.

I'm 5 weeks and I have no ms.
I am also about 5 weeks along and no morning sickness. I too would love it to reassure me everything's ok.. I get queasy sometimes, but nothing bad. I lost my first one, I didnt experience it there either.
I'm 6 weeks and no morning sickness, I would really like to have it to know everything is ok. I saw my doctor yesterday and because I too lost my first one he's sending me for an early ultrasound just to keep my mind at ease. I'll have them throught my first trimester. Good luck everyone
im at least 8 wks and this ms is killing me, sick in the morning and at night. throwing up and horrible dry heaves, no comfortable position and hard to sleep at night. nothing really helps i have tried crackers, ginger ale, lemons, dry toast, pretzels, 7-up, sprite, graham crackers, ice pops, any other suggestions. please help! my sister had ms for 9 months and i heard that your more likely to have ms for your entire term if one of your family members has. i really hope not. this is really hard for me. i like food too much to not be able to eat or be afraid to eat in fear of getting sick.
I am 8 and a half weeks and my morning sickness is starting to settle into being just first thing in the morning, after two and a half weeks of all day every day nausea and vomiting.
I too was looking forward to getting morning sickness as I didn't feel pregnant at all, when it arrived i was so relieved!
To all the worried Mum's to be, enjoy it - or hope for just morning sickness, feeling it all day is a nightmare!!
I'm 8.5 weeks - had nausea and stomach aches since week 5 and was sick for the 1st time this morning. Am not sure if i'm going to be sick just in the mornings or throughout the day - don't really want to eat either. Is so difficult to work when feeling like this.
I'm 4 weeks n I not got ms yet but startin to feel queezy of a night around 8...... My husband is dreadin ms..... But I lookin 4ward 2 it so I no everything okay....... Good luck ladies....
I am 16 weeks today. I have been sick all day...everyday for 8 weeks. I have had 5 IV's and I walk around with a pump inserted in my leg to get medicine to help with the ms. I have lost 15 pounds and I am miserable. I have a two year old who is now pretending to throw-up in the trash can just like mommy. I have tried everything and I mean everything to settle my stomach. I then look at my little boy and know that it will all be worth it in the end. Good luck ladies
I had horrid morning sickness and the only thing that helped me were acupressure bands that you wear on your wrists. It was the saving grace for me since I am a professional equestrian and still had to work in the early stages of my pregnancy. My company makes acupressure wear and they work wonders. If you are suffering from constant nausea then take a look at my products. Good luck!!
i am seven weeks pregnant, but no ms yet. sometimes i don't feel too great, but never get sick. my back is killing me in the mornings i have cramps every once in a while. i haven't had any spotting, but i wish i could know that everything is alright.
I'm 6wks and my first real ms day is today. I have felt little sick a couple times a day before but quickly went away, but today it's not going away and I've been to the bathroom 3times already. This is my 3rd kid hope it's a boy but happy either way. I was alittle scared at first because I've had 2mc's. But I didn't get sick with my mc's and I have with my full pregs. so hope all is well. Good luck to everyone.
I am in my 9th week and I feel horrible with 24/7 nauseau and vomiting...All my excitements are gone . I am so limited to my bed, bathroom and couch ...I feel terrible
I am 8.5 weeks pregnant. I have morning sickness all day and night, and it comes on for no rhyme or reason. It started with me at 5 weeks and has gotten increasingly worse. I'm feel sick when I'm hungry, then I feel sick after I eat. When my co-workers take off because they are sick, I think "oh give me a break, try being nauseous all day everyday and still have to work".
I'm 12 weeks and 4 days pregnant today and didn't experience ms at all ! ! ! !lucky me ! ! ! I went for my 3month check up and baby is healthy and there is nothing to complain about, my skin however did break out : ( but it is clearing now so I'm exited ! ! ! I'm tall so I'll prob. only show at 5 months : (
Good luck to all the pregnant ladies with ms ! ! !
i am in my 6th week i am already tired of the morning sicknesses and its not ok for me coz i am still working and i get so tired easily...its my first baby and i sometimes get scared when i vomit too much eish...good luck to all..i hope for the best...cant seem to keep the food in....
I have had morning sickness throughout this pregnancy.. I have had it so bad that I even threw up my own stool once. The doctor said it is perfectly normal so Im hoping everything is ok. Im 15 weeks.
I'd be 4 weeks right now, though I don't know for sure yet if I'm preg. Five nights ago I suddenly felt HORRIBLY nauseated and it's been that way off and on since, mostly in the evenings. I stayed home Tuesday from work. It got to the point of gag, but no vomit. Now it's fleeting. Ginger did not make a difference...and I know morning sickness. I suffered MISERABLY with both my sons, so I have tried everything in the book. For those suffering, club crackers and Sprite were the best. I started early sickness with both boys too. Morning sickness happens at ANY time of day, or all day, for you new ladies. I empathize with those of you suffering. It felt like the stomach flu, 24/7. Stay hydrated, drink water lots, even if you chuck it back up...a little will stay in. Straight ginger will help most...crystallized or in a tea...you can get it powdered and mix with hot water. For this time, the only thing that is helping...is cayenne pepper. It is an herb that actually cools and soothes the stomach, despite it's "hot" taste. It's a good last resort and one I intend to utilize. Try it girls, those of you who are desperate...you'll be surprised.
I am 7 weeks I hardly can keep my eyes open and its very difficult to work daily. MS has put a toll on my activities and its very difficult to function normally. I hope MS will decrease or get better soon, because MS is very challenging to deal with all day every day.
I am 14 weeks 2 days. I haven't had any morning sickness. Is this normal?????????
I used to wish I would get MS to know that everything was going ok, but then when it came at week 6, ARRRRHHHH!!! I am sick all day every day, but luckily for me eating actually helps (for about 2 mins). I'm coming into week 9 now and I think its starting to fade, I'm just really tired now. I found peppermint tea helped me and frozen berries, the ones you buy to make smoothies.
this is my third pregnancy and im 6 weeks and 2days but i didn't feel morning sickness and with my first and second i was had a worse morning sickness until 5 months so im really worried.
im at least 6 wks and this ms is killing me. tried EVERYTHING .. nothing is working out. i keep spiting all day . cant eat / cant drink ... even medication is not working wid me -- plsss help guys. my last pregnancy (before 12 yrs) was as bad as this , still 7 n half months to go... if this nausea leaves me my pregnacy will become so beautiful. PLS HELP
I AM 6 WEEKS PREGNANT, AND I HAVENT HAD MS YET, AND IM HOPPING IT STAYS THIS WAY! BY THIS TIME MY LAST 2 PREGNANCY'S WITH MY GIRLS I FELT HORRIBLE! I HAD MS ALL DAY EVERYDAY FOR FOUR MONTHS STRAIGHT! I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my first and for the past few weeks I've been nauseous all day but didn't throw up until today. I HATE throwing up and it makes me cry, lol. I don't have much of an appetite and have to force myself to eat a little something. It varies day to day. Lately I have been feeling worse in the evenings and have had trouble sleeping. I teach, so I'm thankful I haven't felt sick at work yet but I'm afraid it may start. I don't know what I'll do if I have to puke while teaching!
I am 7 weeks pregnant and the nausea and dizziness has hit with a vengeance. Luckily, I teach in a family business so I've been given 3 months grace while I cope with this ! It's my first baby and have ms all day and all night..... terrible.
I'm 9 weeks and my morning sickness has just started. I've also been extremely tired for the past 3 weeks with no energy at all.
I am just 9 weeks and although I have been feeling nauseous for the past 3 weeks I started being sick this morning, should I be worried that it has only just started?
try dramamine for nausea, it worked wonders for me, try the low-drowsy kind.
i am about 12weeks pregnant. ive only really felt sick n been sick acouple of times. i had really bad ms with my first 2girls. do u think this one could be a boy? at first i wasnt botherd if it was a boy/girl just so long as it was healthy. but i lost my grandad 2weeks ago, and its due right by his birthday an now i am longing for a boy.
I am 7 weeks pregnant with my 4th (and last!) child. I had no morning sickness with my other 3 children at all and am sooo sick with this one. I am sick all day and all night. Nothing is helping, I am so miserable. I also have heartburn and horrible burping. I have tried everything. It is very hard taking care of my other kids being this sick. (I am also extremely tired this time)
Im almost 5 weeks and ms sucks
im good with the cravings but ms is so annoying and kinda hard to deal with i have it all day everyday
I'm in my 6th week with my second pregnancy, and still no morning sicknes... I'm not asking to get it, I didn't have it with my older son, either. I felt really tired and had headaches and dizziness last week, but this week I feel totally fine. I hope it stays this way and everything is perfect just like last time.
Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone else is going through what I am . I'm almost 8 weeks pregnant. I suffered 3 miscarriages in the past 14 months and have never made it this far. I had one scan already which showed the amniotic sack and nothing else, the nurse said it was too early. I have another scan tomorrow (on my 2nd wedding anniversay) and am sooo scared that they'll be nothing there as I don't really feel pregnent :( The only symptoms I have are sore breasts which come and go and constipation, oh and my face has broken out in spots this week. Other than that I don't feel really tired or sick or anything. Any advice would be most welcome right now.
Thank you :)
when did you have your first scan? ive just recently found out that i am pregnant i have the amniotic sack and nothing else and was told the same its just too early???
i had morning sickness 8 times a day for 28 weeks and lost 2 stone in the 1st 3 months of being pregnant!!
im 27 weeks pregnant and had no morning sickness or any symptoms what so ever. I was real nervous at the start because i had no signs of being pregant although i am. I constantly keep asking what is wrong with my body? Why is it taking pregnancy so easily? Everyone says to enjoy it, ur the lucky ones but even though i tried i was still worried because my body wasnt giving me any signs if anything is wrong. Altho our bodies not ging through ms, doubts and worries always creeps in just as the mums to b who is suffering! I still till this day has no symptoms and finall my belly has pop out and baby girl is kicking and punching me. Thats the only sign of pregnancy that i have so far! Best of luck ladies! :)

i am 8 weeks pregnant and have only thrown up once i feel a bit sick in the mornings but then im fine , is this normal.I have had one ultrasound and i saw the baby its heart was beating strong so im not to worried would just like to know if its normal
I'm sorry to all of you dealing with ms! I had it through my first pregnancy and I was in an office the whole time and it was crappy. However, I dealt with it by eating things around the time I usually would get sick during the day, that I was okay throwing back up (sounds gross I know but it made it better). I lived off strawberry yogurt and cantaloupe. It doesn't taste as bad as puking up a ceasar salad and it's gentle on the throat. Sorry I know it's gross but you have to deal! Good luck to everyone!
I am 6 weeks and I have not yet to have ms! I begin to feel queasy every night but that's about it. I had an ultrasound 5.5 weeks and they only could see the yolk sac not fetal pole yet because it was too early. I hope to get a little ms by next week to assure everything is going smoothly! Either way, I get another ultrasound in a few days because I'm one of those with a "heart" shaped uterus, they have to closely monitor my pregnancy. So wish me luck :)
I am 6 weeks and i already has ms..i feel discomfort specially @ work place..i can't concentrate on my work the only thing i feel is nousea and need to sleep. ...I hope it will last soon...Good luck everyone.
My friends are all having a baby and talk about their MS daily!!
Congrats to all the expecting mothers on this page, as well as the ones who have already given birth! :)
I'm 7 weeks and luckily no MS yet. I hope it stays this way, but I am extremely exhausted all the time, it’s really a hassle to wake up every morning. Yesterday I was so tired that I had to ask to leave from work at noon. Today I took a nap in the afternoon for three hours straight! I don't know how I can do my daily activities if this continues! GL ladies with your pregnancies.
My girlfriend and I had sex for the first time without a condom a few days ago and now she is constantly vomiting for no reason. Could this be a sign of pregnancy although its only been a few days?
I'm going on my 6th week. I have been constantly nauseous since the 4th week. The other night I had my first bout of vomiting "night sickness" and I often dry heave throughout the day. I think it's horrible. My fear is that its going to get worse. I know its going to be worth it in the end but at this rate I cant even enjoy being pregnant. I had a mc last year at 8 weeks and did not feel any of the symptoms I am now, so at least I feel a little reassured that things are normal. I just wish I would start to feel better. I know I have ways to go.
with my first pregnancy i felt sick up to 16 weeks but was only sick a couple of times, with my second pregnancy i was sick all day and all night from 4 weeks onwards, it got so bacd at 14 weeks i was sick 14 times in 1 day and had to be admitted to hospital and put on a drip because of severe dehydration. i do not wish morning sickness on any pregnant woman and those who have not yet experienced it please count yourselves lucky! it really is awful feeling that bad for weeks and weeks!
I have had 5 healthy pregnancies. I had morning sickness with all 5. The 3rd and 4th pregnancies were severe, (one of them was a boy and the other a girl). I was given B-6 shots to help with the nausea. It started at 5 1/2 wks with each one, and now, 10 years after I had the last one, I am preg with baby #6(at the age of 40!). I just hit the 5 wk mark, anticipating ms any day now....
I am 5 weeks pregnant with my second child. With my first I had severe nausea but no vomiting thank god, This time around I've still had pretty intense nausea but I take phenergan for that, And it also helps if you are vomiting ask your OBGYN about it, it works wonders! Good luck ladies I hope this morning sickness goes away for all of you so you can enjoy your pregnancy!!!
I'm 4 and a half months pregnant and i have had no morning sickness...This is my first one and im sixteen so i really wish i would have morning sickness it know everything is ok...i hope i start soon
I was sick through at least two trimesters my first pregnancy, and had to get IV fluids once, until I started taking Zofran (Ondansetron). It is rated as being safer than Phenagyn, and doesn't make you so drowsy. I'm almost 8 weeks, and have been sick all day every day for two weeks. My prayers go out to all of you who are suffering with me. At the end, there is a beautiful child, but that's hard to remember right now!
Just because you have morning sickness doesn't mean everything is ok with your pregnancy. It means your going to be sick everyday and your going to hate it!! I had none, didn't even feel sick once in my pregnany and my baby was fine.
my girl friend and i didnt actually have sex but we kind of dry humped naked and then after like 2 weeks she got her menustral bleed w/c lasted for 5 days and now she became kid of nauseas last night, she is a virgin, can she be pregnant please help me
I'm supposed to be 8 weeks pregnant or so , I had taken pregnacy test a few weeks ago and they came back negative , last week a took 5 tests ( 3 of the ones with lines and two digital) and they all were possitive, I still havent gone to see a doc yet , I do have most of the symptoms but hardly any nausea and no vomit at all,I also been having mild cramps through out all these weeks. I almost have a headache every day and feel dizzy, is it normal to be 8 weeks preg and not have morning sickness???
im 7 weeks and 1 day today. No morning sickness yet, but tired all the time... I also feel dizzy all day. I think its perfectly normal...
Vikki that was a rather insensitive comment. Morning sickness IS usually a sign that everything is okay, not necessarily with your body, but the baby's. Most mothers are more concerned that the pregnancy is going well and that Baby is okay. Often first time mothers have no morning sickness. With each pregnancy the symptoms can tend to get worse, a sign that your body is doing what its supposed to do.
I'm confused as to why this article didn't mention eating protein as a way to combat morning sickness. Saltines and crackers are a surefire way to make things worse, that theory has been disproven for years.
Before I got out of bed each morning my husband would make me 2 eggs and bacon, then I would eat very little carbs for lunch (just veggies and chicken) and some whole grains for dinner. This is the only way I was able to keep from having morning sickness, a friend told me about this protein method and I was able to go about my day normally, even though it was my 5th pregnancy and I had been sick with all the others. Saltines did not work for my 4th child, I was sick for 8 months.
Hi everyone someone may have already mentioned this, I didn't read all of the comments but, I wanted to tell you guys about Zofran. It's a medicine that's used to treat nausea in cancer patients and I had such bad morning sickness with my first that I had to be prescribed it. Ask your doctor about it! I'm 5 weeks with my second and was on here because I haven't had sickness yet. Cross your fingers for me that I won't get it. It was unbearable with my daughter. Have happy pregnancies!
I never got morning sickness with my first, I did however feel sick if I had coffee, this time I found out I was preg before my period, I can't stand chicken, or strawberries the smell is horrid e and I was feeling nauseous since implantation, I'm now 4 and a bit weeks still queasy and have the worst gas, I cant stop burping!!
Morning sickness is tough. I've had it pretty bad with all three of my girls. I did notice that certain things that I ate made it better. Since my third I've learned quite a bit from my nutritiionist and herbalist. This is my 4th pregnancy... I'm working hard to keep my protein intake a day up to 80 grams. I'm drinking a lot of filtered water and eating frequently and before I start to get hungry. I make sure that I get a little protein before I go to bed so my tummy has something to work on during the night and I do a protein shake first thing in the morning. Exercise helps to level out the hormones and although you really may not want to... force yourself to get out and walk hard swinging your arms. You will be surprised how well you will feel. Just think... this will not last much longer and you will be holding your precious little baby in your arms real soon and all of this suffering would have been worth it. Hang tough mamas... you CAN do this!!!

I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and final baby and had terrible all day everyday sickness with my 2 sons and this baby is even worse :-( constantly vomiting all the time and finding it hard 2 cope. Have my driving test on Wednesday and don't know how I'm going 2 get through it without throwing up! Tried medication including cyclizine but nothing has helped x

Morning sickness as a name used to annoy me. It was all day, every day, for 9 months, for me!
