Giant spider egg hatching. Eeww!
Giant spider egg hatching. Eeww!

While decorating for Halloween is a lot of fun and I highly recommend it, it isn't a budget priority, right? A lot of decorate like decorating for Halloween but don't want to spend $200 (which you can easily if you step foot into a Halloween USA), make a lot of your decorations. Homemade Halloween decorations dress up the house nicely, let you be creative and are a lot of fun, especially if you get others in on the act.

Why decorate the house?

My mother didn't do a lot of decorating for Christmas and decorating for Halloween was practically unheard of when I was little. She wouldn't have decorated for Halloween even if it was in style. But as I got older and got my first apartment, I looked forward to participating in Halloween and giving out candy was totally fun. The next year I got dressed up to give out candy--the kids get a kick out of seeing this grown woman dressed as Raggedy Anne (even if they really don't know who she is). And every year, there was a little more on the house and little more.

Now that I have kids who are older enough to particiapte I can tell you they get such a kick out of this "season". The look forward to October 1 when I pull out the Halloween decorations and costumes that still fit. They ask what new decorations are we going to make this year and what parties will we visit. They love decorating and trying to be the most decked out house on the block. And I enjoy it too. In fact, we now even have a friendly little war going on with the neighbor for Halloween-iest house! Part of the fun is making our own homemade Halloween decorations like ghosts that fly in the trees and tombstones that on which we write our own funny epitaths. It just adds to our entertainment and enjoying the season.

OK, the demon here is rocking it, I must say!  Kinda of nasty, coming out from behind the bush like that!I don't think my 8-year-old is digging it as much as I, but I knew we'd have to go for a... - 3 years ago

You can do just about anything homemade and for much less money than store bought. And homemade Halloween decorations might not look exactly the same as store bought, but they can certainly be a ton more creative. They way I see it, people either go friendly Halloween (black cats and white ghosts and stuff that won't freak out younger children) or gruesome Halloween (severed heads, bloodied sheets, zombie hands reaching out and other disturbing images). You can easily go either way making your own decorations. Look at craft books, your favorite scary movies, and even other people's houses and use your imagination to decorate your house for Halloween.

  • Wholesome Halloween ghosties, bats and Jack o' lanterns
