Going Condo in Detroit

If you are new to Detroit, you may consider buying a condominium over a house. Despite our reputation, there are many lovely areas of the city that are perfect for condo living. Owning a condominium is much different from a single-family home, with a different set of pros and cons. But if this is a lifestyle that is right for you, Detroit condominiums have a lot to offer.

The Condo Life

Is condo life right for you?

Typcially, you don't want the hassle of dealing with "landscape", no mowing lawns, no curbsides to clean, etc. Maintenance is also generally less than with a house. Condos typically have more security with buzzers or a guard service, and neighbors for that matter. The proximity of the neighbors and common areas, of course, can also be a pro or con, depending on how much you like other people.

You probably will have more fees to pay to the condo association than you would for a house in a neighborhood and you do have to live with more rules set by the condo association. And when you are ready to sell, you may not get as great of a deal as with a house. That's one reason why buying a condo in Detroit is so attractive now with most of the real estate market on the bottom of downturn. Good deals abound. But don't forget, markets fall and they also rise!
