Any time your child is online, you have to be concerned and watchful, even on Websites just for kids.
Club Penguin is an online virtual world that is growing in popularity with kids from about 8 to 14. This Web site is now owned by Disney and they take effort to keep it a save place for kids. How well do they do?
Is Club Penguin Safe?
Not counting the consumerism, Club Penguin appears to be a safe environment for children for several reasons:
- There is absolutely no advertising on the site. (On the other hand, this is how they justify charging $6 a month to support the site.)
- There is nothing to download on your computer.
- Club Penguin is rigorous about applying their policies and are quick to ban offending penguins.
- The site is heavily monitored.
- Club Penguin hires monitors to watch the activity in all areas. That what the the gold shield with an "M" in the upper right corner of the screen means. If anything gets out of hand, they'll step in and stop it. You can also report abuse to them.
- Your children are encouraged to be watchdogs. Penguins that have been members for 45 days are invited to be Secret Agents. Their 'duties 'include, among other things, reporting bad penguins or any inappropriate activit to Club Penguin
- The Club Penguins servers have monitoring software that searches through all the chat for any inappropriate words, inappropriate information (like phone numbers, schools, addresses), or inappropriate conversation, even the text shortcuts that kids use. Messages are prevented from being displayed (for instance, it is supposed to recognize phone numbers right away) and a warning is sent or the offending penguin is banned.
Club Penguin is rated high for safety among watchdog groups like the Better Business Bureau - Kid's Privacy Seal of Approval and NetSmartz, but you always have to take this with a grain of salt and still monitor your child's Web activity yourself.
Safety for Your Kids in Club Penguin
How to Monitor Your Kids
- Play Club Penguin with them.
- Play Club Penguin by yourself every now and then.
- Make sure to use your email address when signing up. Do not create an email address for your child just for Club Penguin or if they already have an address, do not use theirs for signing up.
- Limit their time in the Club. For instance, allow 30 minutes on odd days and an hour on even.
- Select the member option of Ultimate Safe Chat. This way, your child can chat with other players only by selecting a phrase from a list of stock phrases (Hi, Good game, I'll be back). And they can only see messages from other Ultimate Safe Chat messages.
- to set chatting capabilities, go to the Club Penguin homepage, click Membership, scroll to the bottom and select Edit Membership.
- Teach your children how to keep their guard up
- never give out personal information such as real name, age, location, phone number or school.
- tell a parent and moderator about anything weird or uncomfortable or if someone asks you for personal information.
- Let your child be a Secret Agent. Secret Agents are penguins that have played for at least 30 days with no offensive activity. Secret Agents are also asked to help keep Club Penguin safe and report anyone who is being disruptive or using offensive language.
In addition to these safety efforts, Club Penguin also tries to discourage excessive use. New features come out weekly, rather than daily, and the site doesn't punish users for not visiting frequently, as some competing sites do. The rumor is that Club Penguin creators plan to release a feature in June that will let parents limit how much time kids spend on the site.

We have also experienced what seems to be an unwarranted ban. ClubPenguin should at least have to tell you why you were banned and there should be steps to take to dispute the findings. We can't even get a reply to our email, never mind talk to someone about it. I resent time that I paid for being taken away without any explanation at all. Not to mention that you can't correct behavior that you are unaware of. And what about "penguins" who decide to just be mean to you and falsely report you? There do not seem to be any safeguards for that.
club penguin has charged my bank account for the past nine months. I have repeatly e-mailed them to cancel the account back in feburary and have done so ever since. They still charge my account. Does any one know how to stop this thieving company.I need a phone number because they won't answer my e-mails.
cindy, you can go to clubpenguin.com to cancel it. or you can log in to clubpenguin at play.clubpenguin.com and in the bottom left hand corner, there will be a "?". click that and then click "manage account." there, you can cancel the membership.
club penguin should do something like runescape, where if someone gets banned, the moderators get a video of the last 60 seconds. (just to see who really SHOULD get banned.)
also, if you get banned, will your whole computer get banned?

If this is the case katherine678, contact a moderator inside the game or have your parent email Club Penguin support. They've been helpful for me when I've had to contact them regarding my daughter's account.

I don't know why Kitty, but I know it is an annoying trend with many websites as well as Club Penguin.

my 6 year old daughter was just banned "forever". She has never had any temporary bans or warnings from club penguin. I'm very frustrated that they don't have any PHONE NUMBERS to contact them! I'm always with her when she is on club penguin - and haven't seen anything that warrants banning her forever.
I'm starting to think it's just a ploy to get the money but not upgrade servers to accomodate that many members. I'm very sad for my daughter who has cried for over an hour because she has no idea why she is banned forever.
I've tried sending two different messages to club penguin, but, waiting TWO days for a response seems ridiculous.
My recommendation to any parents considering a membership is to completely forget it - there's too much of a chance that it will end in heart break over the membership getting banned for no reason!

I also am VERY ANGRY that Club Penguin does NOT have ANY phone number that parents can contact them at. We just found out that they have been DOUBLE billing us for months now, on TWO different charge cards. ONE of those cards is a Bank of America charge card that wants to DOUBLE our interest rates if ANY charges AT go onto the card!!!! I contacted Bank of America and told them that I have TRIED to see to it that the Club Penguin account IS shut down, but as they were DOUBLE billing us, I cannot be ABSOLUTELY sure that they won't bill that charge card. I wanted to get to TALK to someone, or write to someone about this, and instead am told that I HAVE to know what my child's "Penguin Name"????? is and her email in order to be able to send off an email about this.
The BANK says that if Club Penguin bills even $5.95 onto that card, they will then DOUBLE our interest charges, and won't reconsider.
I HATE Bank of America at this point, for doing this to us, and I am NOT happy with Club Penguin for DOUBLE billing us, and for having NO good way for parents to contact them and actually TALK to someone to resolve ANYTHING!!!!!

i never got banned also i have an account that i got into but the owner made it and said he/she wanted people to have it now i share it with over 100 people. that person is nice. there is an option you have on club penguin that is you cannot tipe on your computer you have to use the words club penguin gives you. this is very safe and it can never get banned.

I have a 6 year old daughter. I recently bought her a membership. She logged on her account had a party with her friends (Now, i supervise her when she is on. She goes on safe chat as well.) So, she had to go to the movies, logged back on played for a bit adopted a new puffle. Then got off to eat lunch. Logged back on. Banned for 72 hours. I've sent non stop e-mails to club penguin. I got really pissed when they didn't reply in 5 weeks!!! As soon as i got her a membership she was banned. I am going to sue club penguin to get my money back and unbann her account. It might seem fun having access to unaccessable stuff when you are a non member. But, there's a dark side. Ever since Disney took over club penguin. A lot of weird stuff has been going on. My daughter got banned for 24 hours for using inappropriate language and I agreed w/ their decision. One and a half hours after her account was back up she was banned again for 72 hours for the following comments: "sits on" "crosses legs" "puts money on boo" - I cannot get a response after 2 days and 5 emails as to why this is inappropriate. My daughter swears up and down that she didn't even type that. Cried for hours and tells me that she doesn't want to play anymore. This is after having a membership for almost a year w/ zero bans. Then they bombard her with bans w/ zero explanation. Horrible site!!!
I paid for 2 memberships as birthday presents for my children. However, It is impossible to log onto the Site. After pressing the 'Play Now' the page just refuses to load. I have written repeatedly to Club Penguin but have not received any response (3 weeks and counting) - does anyone have the same problem?

Hello I am a teenager who plays Clubpenguin and i am responding to the person who commented there name is "Concerned Parent" what they said is a falicy because..
1.Clubpenguin does tell why you where banned and it even sends a/an e-mail to the e-mail address who created the penguin
2.When penguin Press the report player button they cannot bann the other player what it does is when they click thay button lets say the click abuse it will send a little note to the clubpenguin HQ.in canada and they will look over the last couple of conversations and if there is the moderators will take action.

Hi guys! Today I got banned for 24 hours.i think i did something offensive or said somthing that is not allowed.I have emailed them and each time they email me back the next morning.i am very sad but i will be on the day after tommorow!
i got banned 4 saying "oh zip it" today!!! My dad payed 4 a five year permium membership and im wondering whether we'll get our money back. And plus no one was there when i used that language.
Avoid Club Penguin, they have very poor customer service. I contacted them repeatedly when I received my credit card bill for automatically renewing my son. They even told me when he last used it, four months ago. His account expired in September and they automatically renew it - that is their policy. If you contact them when you receive the bill, too bad, they let you know they would automatically renew when you signed up. Of course, the only way you can get an account is by credit card... I would say they have quite a business model to fleece parents out of at least one extra cycle of payments. Disney should be ashamed if this is really one of their subsidiaries.

Well, I still have my account, but Club Penguin is crazy! They automatically changed my password without notifying me. When I had first made my account back in 2007, I had used my friend's dad's email. So my Dad had to go through all this nonsense to get my account back. It was very strange. My friend's dad didn't do anything to change my password like that. It just happened out of the ordinary blue.
I feel like there is a program in which you can download to hack other people's accounts without ever finding out the passcode to it. Microchip123 makes all these programs for Club penguin, but I don' t think he has made a trainer for hacking activity. I do feel like it's Club penguin's fault for most of the destruction for these innocent accounts. I don't know what else to say, but to say parents are the ones who said yes for their child to make the accounts. So, parents need to really do some heavy thinking and decide for themselves.

Yes Starry, that happened to me just about once or twice. Just have some self confidence in yourself and believe that your account is still out there. It doesn't hurt but to try to click on the log in button.

My friend had only been banned onece on Club Penguin, but that was because her brother got on. She had been a member on and off for the past few months. One week after her membership expired she was BANNED FOREVER! WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION OR PHONE NUMBER. I feel really bad for her. I wish there was something i could do.
Very suspicious... Maybe her brother was the one that banned her account forever. But the question is: Was her account rare and had she made her account back in 2006 or maybe even in 2007? Because usually if Club penguin realizes that a different person is going on that account all the time, they will start to become very curious and wonder if it is a someone who doesn't even own the account. So, they will ban the penguin account forever only so they can protect the account from someone else who might as well ban it forever. That's what I've noticed anyways..

Disney isn't stupid. Disney bought CP and they are trying to keep the kids safe. For example lets say you went on cp then you went to a server. then you did nothing (not even swear) and you got banned. I think they should have a surveillance cam to catch the last minute that it was the minute they got banned. Like Runescape has. And if youre a member and you get banned you dont lose your member. But when cp unbans your acc you get free member for 1 month.
I made my 1st clubpenguin account for my daughter in 2005 or 2006 something like that and she got banned for 24 hours for nothing. Then after 2 days she went back on and everything was normal. Then i made 3 more accounts with memberships for my other daughter and 2 sons. and everything has been normal even after Disney bought Club Penguin. My first daughter went on again a few years later and wanted to change her Penguin Name so i eamiled the Contact Us part of clubpenguin and they havent answered yet! My daughter is getting really annoyed with her name though so i emailed them again and they say its FAST SERVICE!!! HAH!!!

to not be double billed just go to the store and buy a membership card. it has a pin number on it and you dont use your credit card for it.its simple and it works my friend got banned for usings a credit card for it he got banned FOREVER and thats just bull sht. anyone wanna go to club penguin people talk wit them they tell u no and so you say shut the f--k up f----rs dam u peeps!! i do know how to get over 50000coins though so if u a member you dont have to earn them and it will not positvely will not ban you. go to clubpenguintrainers.com click money maker and download it. you can get up to 50000 coins in and hour and a half you do have to wait till the next day to have all the coins.

Ok so I went on club penguin and I said shuts door with hip and it said I was banned from the server so I logged off and tried to get on again and no "you are banned" signs showed up so after I logged on and it says logging in (penguin name) and about 3 hrs later it was the exact same!!! Help me plz! Did I get banned forever? If not how long? Did the take away my member ship? Is my account closed? Help!!

i was ban only once. but two times when i tryed to get in it said i was ban. this time it said my acount was gone. i wasnt on i was somewhere else. i dont think its fair that someone went on my account and just got it kicked of.
